Credibility can make you or break you. This may be even more so now with the internet. With so much information being published on so many topics it is hard to know what to believe. That is where credibility can give you a huge advantage.
For example if you know a lot about a subject like medicine that is great however if you don't have the MD at the end of your name few will listen. The MD is a credibility indicator and you need them if you want to stand out from the crowd.
The person with the most credibility indicators gets all the sales, not the one with the most knowledge.
But how do you acquire credibility indicaters in the less time possible.
Follow these steps, which allowed a woman in 3 weeks become a "top Relationship Expert" allowing her to counsel Fortune 500 companies.
1. Join 2 or 3 related trade organizations with official sounding names. In the womans case she chose the Association for Conflict Resolution (www.acrnet.org) and The International Foundation for Gender Education (www.ifge.com)This can be done online in 5 minutes.
2. Read the 3 top selling books on your topic and summarize each on one page.
3. Give one free 1 to 3 hours seminar at the closest well known University, using posters to advertise. Then do the same at 2 branches of 2 well known companies. Tell the companies you have given seminars at X university or X college and are a member of the groups from step 1. Emphasize you are offering to speak for free to get more experience outside the academics and will not be selling products or services. Record the seminars from 2 angles using them latter as a CD/DVD product.
4. Optional: Offer to write 1 or 2 articles for trade magazines related to your topic citing your accomplishments from steps 1 to 3 for credibility. If they decline offer to interview a known expert and write the article. It still gets your name listed as a contributor.
5. Join ProfNet which is a service journalists use to find experts to quote for articles. Getting PR is simple if you stop shouting and start listening. Use steps 1 to 4 to demonstrate credibility and online research to respond to journalists queries.
Done properly and you will be all of the media in on time.
